In most cases, people are compelled to go to Court pursuant to a “Promise to Appear” or a “Summons to a Person Charged with an Offence.” If you have received one of these documents, you must attend court on the date indicated. Failure to do so is itself a criminal offence. However, if you retain a lawyer in advance, your lawyer may attend court on your behalf without you needing to personally attend. If your “Promise to Appear” directs you to attend the police detachment for fingerprinting, you must personally attend on the date indicated.
