An aging inmate boom? CBA National

May 9, 2015/in Legal News /by mtp_admin

0cb5fe00-aa8d-4794-ada6-812a741b38e9_610_407In a pre-election announcement by the federal Conservative government changes will be made to the release process for inmates serving a second jail sentence of more than two years where the individual has previously served a jail sentence of more than five years for a violent offence. Comment by Victoria Criminal Lawyer Michael Mulligan in an article by Justin Ling in the CBA National. While the actual changes are so narrow they will have a very limited impact, they are indicative of a formalistic approach to corrections that is counterproductive. Decisions on release need to be made on an individual basis, assessing the risk posed by a particular individual, rather than by formula calculated to support a press-release.
